Reo Iguma, a 4th year medical student who carried out a research at our department last year, presented his results entitled “A systematic review of hospitalization rate and case fatality rate for RSV infections” at the 9th Asian Congress of Pediatric Infectious Diseases held in Fukuoka on Nov 12, 2018.
We welcomed four 3rd grade students, Adachi, Ito, Uesaka, and Nishiguchi to our department. They will practice and participate in basic research for three months. They also have an opportunity to involve themselves in research on field epidemiology of infectious diseases in the Philippines as a part of training.
Daiki Kobayashi and Sirjan Bastola received doctor's and master's degrees, respectively.
Ms. Oyungerel Darmaa from National Center for Communicable Diseases, Mongolia visited our department under the Sakura Science Plan and learned about epidemiological analysis for influenza surveillance. She also visited Miyagi Health and Environmental Laboratory for understanding infectious disease control in Japan.
Hiroshi Kita, a 4th year medical student who carried out a research at our department last year, presented his results entitled “Development of PCR detection system including Norovirus GI polymerase domain and capsid domain and evaluation of test characteristics” at the Annual Meeting of Japanese Society of Bacteriology Tohoku Branch on Aug 18, 2018.
We have MIURA, KITA, IGUMA and KOBAYASHI for course of basic medicine. They will practice and participate in basic research in our lab for three months.
They will also visit the Philippines for their trainings.

We are having Ms. Kanittapon Supadej (PhD student in Chiang Mai University, Thailand). She will stay in our lab for 3 months and analyze genetic data of norovirus.

We had Mark Reñosa from Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (Philippines) as a JICA short-term visiting scholar in this lab. He conducted analysis for health seeking behavior of sick-children's mother using our data from cohort study by SATREPS project, during his stay.
Prof.OSHITANI took the rostrum and gave panel talk and discussion in a seminar about 'global health R&D and the future of Japan' at Tohoku Univeristy.

Dr. Masayuki SAIJO gave a special seminar about SFTS and Ebola viruses. The imprresive talk included history of discovery of the viruses and cutting-edge research topics.
Prof. OSHITANI, SAITO (Mayuko, Senior assistant professor), KAMIGAKI (Assistant professor) and FURUSE (Assistant professor) have joined in the WHO mission in West Africa for the Ebola outbreak.

We had Pearl Joy B. Retiban from RITM (Research Institute for Tropical Medicine). She conducted collaboration research on drug-resistant bacteria during her stay.
We ar having HONDO, HATAKEYAMA, KUDO and HASHIMOTO for training of basic medicine. They will practice and participate in basic medicine for six months.
They will be involved in studies on field epidemiology about dengue, pediatric pneumonia, rhinovirus and norovirus in the Philippines.
We had Salvacion Galit (a.k.a. Bing) as a JICA short-term trainee. She conducted genetic analyses on Bordetella pertussis (pathogen of whooping cough) from the Philippines.
We had NGUYEN THACH THAO, who is a 3rd grade student at Hue University, Vietnam. This was a part of program called Japan-Asia Youth Exchange Program in Science (Sakura Science Plan 2014). She experienced laboratory works here.
We hosted The 4th Seminar for Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases. All lectures were given in English. We had international students from Japan, China, and Indonesia. They stayed together for whole 4days learning basic epidemiology, analyses using geometric system, and epidemiology of pediatric pneumonia.
