Themes

Challenging the virus

There are many things to be elucidated on the virus and their pathogenicity.
Theme 1: Pathogenesis of respiratory viral infections
Theme 2: Molecular epidemiology and evolutionary dynamics of viruses

Field activities

We connect the research in the laboratory with public health in the field.
Theme 3: Monitoring of respiratory and diarrheal viruses
Theme 4: Overseas field research on infectious disease

Contribution for disease control

It is important to understand the nature of the infectious diseases.
Theme 5: Infectious disease epidemiology and outbreak investigation for public health measures

Overview
The RITM-Tohoku Collaborating Research Center on Emerging and Reemerging Infectious Diseases was established in 2008 between Tohoku University and the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM), which is the national reference center for emerging and remerging diseases in the Philippines. The main objective of the center is to strengthen the capacity of the RITM. We are therefore elucidating causative agents and conduct epidemiological analysis of major infectious diseases from public health perspectives in order to establish the sustainable control programs for infectious diseases in the Philippines. We actively conduct field research together with local hospitals and other local-level institutions and are also collaborating with international research institutes and institutes in Japan and the Philippines.

Overview:
Title
Establishing Research Network for Control of Childhood Acute Respiratory Infections in Asia and Africa
【Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS)】
Overview
Acute respiratory infection including pneumonia is known as one of the leading causes of deaths for children worldwide. We at the Department of Virology, Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine have been conducting comprehensive research on childhood pneumonia in the Philippines since 2008 and found so far that: viruses like respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) play important role as causative agents; there are patients who do not get medical services at the community level; the use of a pulse oximeter is effective device at the primary care setting, and various social factors that are associated with their actions.
In this project, with aid of JSPS, we start to implement the project of creating a new network in Indonesia, Cambodia and Zambia, in addition to the existing network in the Philippines. This project aims to reduce mortalities caused by childhood pneumonia by applying the knowledge from our research in the Philippines to other countries. In each site, we conduct pilot studies in identifying obstacles and challenges in reducing of childhood mortalities by collecting and analyzing data including clinical and epidemiological factors and sharing common or specific problems.. ▶▶▶
